Jordan Davis’ parents to Michael Dunn: “Our son is not just another day at the office”
A Florida jury found Michael Dunn guilty on four of the five charges in a case in which he was accused of shooting 17-year-old Jordan Davis to death over loud music
Jordan Davis’s parents have spoken out since their son’s killer, Michael Dunn was convicted.
A Florida jury found Michael Dunn guilty on four of the five charges in a case in which he was accused of shooting 17-year-old Jordan Davis to death over loud music, but they could not come to a decision on the murder charge and a mistrial was declared on that count.
Dunn, 47, had faced a first degree murder charge for the shooting death of Jordan Davis in a Jacksonville convenience store parking lot on Nov. 23, 2012.
The judge had instructed the jury that they could consider lesser charges, including second degree murder, manslaughter, justifiable homicide or excusable homicide, but they said the could not come to an agreement on any of those charges.
Dunn was found guilty of four three counts of attempted second degree murder for shooting at other teens in car and one count of firing a gun into a car.
After the verdict was read, Jordan Davis’ parents gave an emotional speech on the case and their son. While upset there was a mistrial on the murder count, they felt some justice had been served.
“It’s sad for Mr. Dunn that he will live the rest of his life in that sense of torment. I will pray for him. I will ask my family to pray for him. But we are so grateful for the charges that have been brought against him, we are so grateful for the truth, we are so grateful that the jurors were able to understand the common sense of it all.’
Jordan Davis’ father, Ron Davis, expressed that his son’s death would not be in vain.
“Our Son Is Not Just Another Day at the Office”, Ron Davis said.
Florida State Attorney Angela Corey states she plans to re-indict Michael Dunn on the first degree murder charge.
Upon sentencing Dunn faces up to 60 years in prison for each attempted murder charge (20 years each count) and 15 years for firing a gun into a car.
Dunn, a software engineer who has a concealed weapons permit and no prior convictions, was waiting in his car while his fiancée was buying snacks inside the gas station convenience store when he got into a verbal fight with Davis and his friends over the volume of their music.
Prosecutors allege that Dunn fired his gun into the car filled with teenagers after a dispute over loud music.
Dunn claimed that he shot in self-defense out of fear after being threatened by Davis and believed he seen a gun.
