Melvin Jovel: Triggerman in NJ schoolyard slaying is sentenced to life
The admitted gun man in the Newark, NJ schoolyard slaying of three college students was sentenced to life in prison. Melvin Jovel, 21, was sentenced this morning to three consecutive life terms plus 20 years.
Newark – Melvin Jovel, 21, the admitted gun man in the NJ schoolyard slaying of three college students, was sentenced to life in prison.
Melvin Jovel was sentenced this morning to three consecutive life terms plus 20 years.
He had pleaded guilty in September to
- three counts of murder
- one count of attempted murder
- weapons charges
The August 2007 attack occurred behind Mount Vernon School in Newark.
Jovel stated he alone shot in the head Terrence Ariel, Iofemi Hightower, and Dashon Harvey. Moments later he walked over to Natasha Ariel, Terrence’s sister, and shot her in the head. She was the only one who survived. He is the second defendant to be convicted in the killing.
The remaining defendants, Jose Carranza, 31, Shahid Baskerville, 18, Gerardo Gomez, 18, and 20-year-old Alexander Alfaro, who is Godinez’s half-brother, will be tried separately.
